    Cholesterol Drugs

Is your blood cholesterol level high? Having heart problems? (Not the emotional type of problems.) If your answer is yes to both questions, I suggest you continue reading. High blood cholesterol is said to be one of the reasons of heart disease. If you have high blood cholesterol it's advisable that you take cholesterol lowering drugs or cholesterol drugs.

Cholesterol drugs are medications that helps lower the level of lipids or fats in the blood. That includes triglycerides and also cholesterol. Too much fats or lipids in the bloodstream amplify the risk of hardening in the arteries or atherosclerosis, heart attack and other heart associated disorder. It helps lower the LDL cholesterol or is more known as "bad" cholesterol level. Cholesterol drugs not only lower the bad cholesterol level it also enhances the level of the HDL cholesterol or "good" cholesterol. Coronary heart diseases are usually related with high "bad" cholesterol levels and low "good" cholesterol levels.

Cholesterol drugs work by expelling the cholesterol that was built up in the blood vessel. Other cholesterol drugs work by reducing the amount of triglycerides or cholesterol that is absorbed or produced by the body. The ways and potency of cholesterol drugs differ. Studies express that there are new forms of cholesterol. These are the "non-HDL cholesterols". Within this groups are Intermediate-Density Lipoproteins or IDLs and the VLDLs or Very Low-Density Lipoproteins. Both types have been related to amplified risk of angina and non-fatal heart attack of individuals who already have heart disease and possibly be treated with cholesterol drugs.

Cholesterol drugs are suggested to have advantages of those individuals who have coronary heart disease has an implantable cardioverter defibrillator or ICD. Cholesterol reducing therapy are said to have an anti-arrhytmic effect. As a result it lessens the occurrence of ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation. It also decreases the need for automatic firing of the ICD.
There are five types of cholesterol drugs. These are statins, bile resins acid, nicotinic acid, ezetimibe and fibrates. Nicotinic acid is a form of vitamin B3 or "niacin", though it's available "over-the-counter", it must be taken under the care of a doctor to see any side effects that the patient may encounter (severe stomach ache, nausea and flushing. Fibrates are the bulk effective in reducing the triglyceride levels. Bile acid resins are a type of cholesterol drugs that reduces the LDL cholesterol or "bad" cholesterol level while raising the HDL cholesterol or "good" cholesterol level. Most of these cholesterol drugs are obtainable only via prescription.

Hence, cholesterol drugs and other antilipemic medications are prescribed to people who have hypercholesterolemia (too much cholesterol levels) or other elevated lipid levels. It is best that you confer your physician if you have questions.
